in the Alhambra

As is generally known, the Muslim presence on the Iberian Peninsula left a deep, lasting impression on the different forms of artistic and cultural expression in Spain, both due to its long duration (almost 8 centuries) and to the strong socio cultural contrast it produced. 
This talk will be focusing on the way different aspects of society were organized during the Muslim period and the institutions through which this was done: the reality of everyday life in Al Ándalus society; its administrative and economic organization. 
We will see how conquering immigrants clashed and mixed with local people leading to similar clashes and mixing of contrasting cultures and lifestyles.
This gave rise to new power structures, to a new society and in a relatively short period of time, the invading forces had spread beyond the frontiers of Hispania.
We will also be looking at the relations between the different groups that inhabited al-Andalus (Muslims, Jews and Christians) and what today we define as the State; the influence of religions, the functioning of the apparatus of power and the administration and collection of taxes.
