As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alhambra accepts the undertakings set out in the Budapest Declaration of 28th June 2002 as strategic objectives:
- “Ensure a suitable, fair balance between conservation, sustainability and development aimed at creating wealth in the surrounding area and improving the quality of life of the local community.”
- “Promote its status as a World Heritage Site via communication, education, research, training and awareness-raising strategies.”
- “Try to ensure that local communities actively participate at all levels in the identification, protection and administration of the assets that belong to our World Heritage.”
In 2004 in Decree 107/2004, of 23rd March 2004 the Alhambra and the Generalife were declared Assets of Cultural Interest, with the category of Monument.
