The Data Analysis Unit of the Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife annually elaborates the “Study of tourist flow and type to the Historical-Artistic Monuments of the Alhambra and the Generalife”.

The main goals of the study are to understand the basic features of tourist demand in the Alhambra and changes in tourist flow during the high and low tourist seasons.

The periodical and systematic presentation of the data and fact sheets facilitates making decisions on issues related to visit demand and more specifically on access control and management of tourist flows.

The analysis tools used in the studies consist of information techniques and reports relative to the number of tourists that visit the Monuments, as well as quantitative analyses of the number of tourists that visit certain areas of the complex, questionnaires to individuals, groups and school groups, and random controls at the entrance of the Nasrid Palaces in order to analyse the saturation level of these fragile areas.

Additionally, qualitative methods based on direct observation of the visitors are also used to determine the standard itinerary and the waiting time for each of the key areas (Alhambra Square, entrance pavilion, Gate of the Nasrid Palaces, Generalife, Alcazaba, toilets, and telephone boxes) and use of the public services.
