Restoration of the Court of the Lions

The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife has carried out an ambitious project for the restoration of the Fountain of the Lions. The project was implemented in several phases beginning with the restoration of Lion number 4 in 2002. This work, which established a precedent for the procedure to be followed in the rest of the project, was later completed with the restoration of the remaining lions and of the basin of the Fountain between 2007 and 2010. While this was going on various studies were commissioned to identify the causes of the damage.

In 2005, the various phases of the project were defined as follows:

-Restoration of the remaining 11 lion figures in the restoration workshop.

-Restoration of the basin of the Fountain in situ

-Repair of the water system

-Complementary archaeological research

-Paving of the Court of the Lions

The restoration project has been objectively documented with images in different graphic and audio-visual formats, and exhibitions have been arranged as a means of disseminating the results of the restoration work. Complementary to and alongside these exhibitions, specialist courses have been organized to delve deeper into all aspects of the Court of the Lions and its famous fountain.
