Archaeological Investigation

The archaeological investigation in the Court of the Lions in the Alhambra arose from the need to renovate the water circuit for the Fountain of the Lions. This work involved excavation at levels that could affect below-ground parts of the Monument and as a result possible archaeological remains. In order to preserve these remains, it was decided to perform a large-scale archaeological excavation over an area that could be enlarged if the results obtained in the surveys so recommended.

This is the first time archaeological research has been carried out in this area of the palaces. It will not only enable documentary records to be taken and archaeological evidence to be conserved, but will also help to resolve a number of outstanding doubts about this palace.
