The aim of this Project is to locate and describe the epigraphic texts that exist in the Historical-Artistic Monument, as well as to develop the inventory, description, transcription and translation of the inscriptions.

Epigraphic corpus of the Alhambra

The Project for the elaboration of the Epigraphic Corpus of the Alhambra and the Generalife is developed jointly by the Council of the Alhambra and the School of Arabic Studies, member of the Scientific Research Higher Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas).

The aim of this Project is to locate and describe the epigraphic texts that exist in the Historical-Artistic Monument, as well as to develop the inventory, description, transcription and translation of the inscriptions.

The first phase of the Project corresponding to the Palace of Comares has been completed. The research staff, formed by experts in Arabic and epigraphic texts, use the most advanced techniques and tools in their work. The fruits of this first research work have materialised in the publication of the first issue of the Collection “Epigraphic Corpus of the Alhambra. Palace of Comares”. The issue includes a CD-Rom book and a catalographic DVD-Rom with the database and a virtual visit to the Monument.   

The second phase of the Project focuses on the Palace of the Lions (Palacio de los Leones), and the third phase will study the epigraphic texts found in the Mexuar, the Gate of Justice (Puerta de la Justicia), the Gate of Wine (Puerta del Vino), Gallery and Tower of Machuca (Galería and Torre de Machuca).
